Protect Our Water Heritage Rights (POWHR) is hiring a full-time Coordinator (40 hours per week) who will work within our decision-making structure with staff and volunteers in planning, coordinating and organizing the day-to-day operations and administrative activities of the organization and major initiatives.
POWHR is an interstate coalition advocating for communities along the proposed Mountain Valley Pipeline in Virginia and West Virginia. Our mission is to protect the water, heritage, ecology and rights of individuals and communities in the region from the harms of fossil fuel expansion and infrastructure development. We operate in a Joint Plan of Work with Virginia Organizing, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, non-partisan statewide grassroots organization dedicated to challenging injustice by empowering people in local communities to address issues that affect the quality of their lives.
Coordinator Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Assisting member grassroots organizations in planning initiatives, hosting community and regional events, and developing outreach and education opportunities and pipeline resistance activities;
- Coordination with other groups/coalitions as appropriate;
- Organization of POWHR face-to-face and online meetings and documenting minutes;
- Administrative, technical and clerical assistance in drafting, editing and publishing regulatory comment filings, media statements, and website content;
- Coordination of communications internally within POWHR and media outlets;
- Maintenance of web resources, including the POWHR website and social media pages;
- Coordination with members of Mountain Valley Watch team, a construction monitoring initiative;
- Collection and organization of data and records maintenance, including Mountain Valley Watch resources;
- Work with coalition members and representatives to outline and execute POWHR’s future goals and plans beyond fighting the Mountain Valley Pipeline.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Professional demeanor, excellent interpersonal skills with emphasis on flexibility and listening, and including ability to work with all socioeconomic levels of groups and organizations;
- Self-starter, independent working and time management skills and willingness to learn;
- Technology skills including facility with WordPress, social media, Microsoft, Adobe, and collaboration software and applications;
- Excellent critical thinking, verbal, and written communication skills, including facilitation experience;
- Familiarity with the unique cultural aspects of rural areas of Appalachia;
- Experience in working with a wide variety of volunteers, diverse populations, community leaders and staff;
- Fundraising and grant writing experience preferred;
- Willingness to be flexible with time, to work evenings and weekends, and to travel, including but not limited to Virginia and West Virginia, within the parameters of health guidelines from state and federal agencies.
Salary is competitive, negotiable, commensurate with skills and experience, and includes benefits. Details will be provided upon expressed interest in the position. The position is funded for one year with potential for renewal following annual review and continued funding. All paid staff working on a Joint Plan of Work must be employees of Virginia Organizing, subject to Virginia Organizing’s Personnel Policies. Salaried employees must sign an employment contract with the Virginia Organizing Executive Director.
