Manchin Desperately Attempts To Fast-track MVP, Again
Washington, DC — West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin introduced the Building American Energy Security Act with the same “permitting reform” text as his failed amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act in December 2022. The bill attempts to force completion and operation of the Mountain Valley Pipeline, by interfering with judicial process and bypassing bedrock environmental and community protection laws. The bill text claims the pipeline has 20 miles of construction left to complete however the company has consistently reported that it is 55.8% complete to full restoration with hundreds of water crossings to be constructed.
Russell Chisholm, Managing Director of the Protect Our Water, Heritage, Rights Coalition (POWHR) responded:
“Senator Manchin is desperate to complete the Mountain Valley Pipeline through federal shortcuts that circumvent normal regulatory and judicial processes because he knows our movement is growing stronger everyday and we will stop the unnecessary, unwanted climate nightmare that is the MVP.”
Dr. Crystal Cavalier-Keck, Executive Director of 7 Directions of Service, responded:
“Senator Joe Manchin is like a bad relative, who only cares about himself. He forgot that he represents thousands of constituents who voted him in office to make the best choices for them. He is abusing power, and only voting for things that affect his bottom dollar. It’s a shame that public officials, like Senator Manchin, have gotten this far away from the communities that they serve, and it is a dog eat dog world.”
