We are hosting a film screening and conversation on colonialism and climate change facilitated by Virginia-based artist Daniel Bachman. After the 25-minute film screening of “Quaker Run Wildfire”, Daniel will host a conversation with the filmmaker about the historical and environmental context of the fires in the film and early colonialism in the region, and Dr. Crystal Cavalier Keck of 7 Directions of Service will talk about their Rights of Nature efforts, which are a new kind of conservation law rooted in Indigenous values that recognize ecosystems as having legally enforceable rights to exist, flourish and be protected.
The event is part of POWHR’s Community of Practice, a facilitated and welcoming space to discuss multimedia creations (films, art, books, etc.) to learn about and foster relationships for community empowerment on issues such as environmental protection, energy alternatives, the just transition framework, liberatory mindsets, and social justice. This is similar to our former book club but expanded to include other forms of media. We will continue to share more information about the Community of Practice.
